Oades\u2019 class made the cards and raised $66 after selling them. That money was donated directly to Lead to Read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSince literacy is so important to me and to our class, it was a great place,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fewer than half of third-graders in Kansas City read at grade level. Children who can\u2019t read at grade-level by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. Lead to Read wants to change that. So does Oades\u2019 class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKids need to be able to read,\u201d she said. \u201cThey need to be able to access books and read and listen to people who read them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This lesson about economic became a much bigger lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt really was just a part of us learning how to share with others,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
